John Mogford was born in London, of a Devonshire family and studied at the Government School of Design at Somerset House. He married a daughter of Francis Danby (the well known Bristol artist 1793-1861), and painting in both oil and watercolour special-ised in marine and coastal scenes, and excelled in painting rocks and cliffs. He was elected Associate of the New Watercolour Soci-ety in 1866, and a full Member in 1867, exhibiting nearly three hundred drawings with them. He also became a Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1883.
