Author name: Albert Edelfelt.
(1854-1905). Finnish painter and illustrator. Edelfelt, the son of a Swedish aristocrat, studied at the University of Helsinki from 1871, determined to become a history painter. In 1874 he moved to Paris where he was a pupil of Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts 1874 – 7. In the late 1870s he was painting historical subjects but was inspired by his friend Bastien-Lepage to paint rural scenes, based upon plein air sketches, in a realist technique. From 1883 he painted summer scenes of Finnish peasant life which, towards the end of the decade, show Impressionist influence tempered by Bastien-Lepage's naturalism.
